Our review
At a glance
- Business model : Advertiser programs with individual commission agreements.
- Publisher tools : Tracking links, deep links, and transaction reporting.
- Important distinction : The advertising network is not one universal Rakuten store referral offer.
Rakuten Advertising gives publishers a way to work with multiple advertisers through an affiliate network. We would choose it for the merchants that match our content and audience, rather than for a supposed network-wide commission. A useful partnership connects a reader’s shopping decision to a relevant store, then makes the resulting transactions understandable in the publisher’s reporting.
Start with a merchant shortlist
A fashion publisher needs stores carrying the items discussed in its selections. A home-office guide needs a different set of products and destinations. Geographic availability matters too: a retailer that fits the topic but cannot serve the reader’s country is a weak recommendation. Network membership and admission to an advertiser program are separate decisions.
We prefer a small set of partners that can support useful articles. Check the catalog, purchase exclusions, and the customer experience before planning a large content calendar. A familiar brand does not guarantee that every product earns commission. The published agreement for that advertiser is what makes a referral commercially meaningful.
Follow the transaction beyond the click
Advertisers set the qualifying actions, commission amounts, and lawful payment conditions for their offers. A percentage of an eligible basket differs from a flat acquisition payment. Returns, cancellations, and reversals may change the amount shown after the original sale. Clicks, tracked transactions, and approved commissions therefore answer different questions about a campaign.
Hypothetical example: under an agreed 5% rate, a qualifying $100 purchase earns $5. Twenty such purchases would produce $100, while four canceled orders would reduce that amount to $80. The rate is illustrative, not a standard Rakuten commission. We would assess a content placement using approved earnings and the account’s actual payment process, rather than assuming every tracked order becomes cash.
Make the destination as specific as the article
Rakuten’s publisher documentation covers creating deep links and testing tracking links. A deep link can take a reader to the relevant product or page instead of the store’s homepage. For a guide about a particular item, that connection helps preserve the usefulness of the recommendation. It also makes sense to keep different placements identifiable in reporting.
We like Rakuten for publishers who want to develop advertiser relationships and build content around an appropriate catalog. Our Awin review and Impact review describe other partnership platforms. Comparing the available merchants and their agreements is more useful than deciding which network has the biggest name. The network supplies the infrastructure; the publisher still has to earn the reader’s trust.
